My Life… Interrupted [Maria]

Maria Bottiglieri is a long-time client of Kardon Institute for Arts Therapy who comes to us for dance/movement therapy and music therapy weekly. In a series of posts, she will reveal how the Kardon community has supported her through a personal health crisis. This is the first in a series of blog posts from our clients in the Peer Committee.

This is my third post for Kardon’s blog. I am going to be sharing with you my very difficult journey with breast cancer. I had always thought of myself as a very healthy person; well, think again!

On March 12th, 2011, I found a lump in my left breast. In my heart of hearts, I knew that it was cancer. However, I was about to have surgery to address another medical issue, so I waited a month to address the issue with my doctor. During that time, I was on an emotional rollercoaster. I had to concentrate on recovering from surgery, and at the same time, I was facing a life-altering situation. It was not easy. I felt angry and betrayed by my body.

I went to the doctor on April 14th, 2011. During that visit, I had all the testing that was needed to make the diagnosis. The next day, I got the news. I was diagnosed with an Invasive Ductal Carniconoma, Stage II A. What a shock it was for me to hear! My grandparents had negative outcomes with their cancer diagnoses and I was determined not to follow suit.

My intent is not to scare anyone, but to give a realistic view on life. I have learned that in any situation, no matter how bleak things may seem, a positive outlook can make a big difference!

My next post will focus on my surgery and ultimately surviving breast cancer.
