My Life and Music, Maria Bottoglieri

Following my first blog post and all the kind words of encouragement I received, I continue with my life and music.

My first year at Settlement Music School was only the beginning. I continued to study voice at Settlement with Michael McLellan and Kathryn Westman. During this time, I performed regularly in recitals; representing both Settlement and Kardon Institute. Each experience increased my confidence and boosted my self-esteem. Music was becoming more than an emotional outlet for me. I really enjoyed performing and appreciated the enthusiasm and spirit of the audience each time I sang. It gave me such a thrill!

This feeling of elation and belief in myself gave me the impetus I needed to take the next step. I made the decision to work toward performing a full recital. Over the next year, Mrs. Westman and I worked together on the program which included some of my favorite songs including: “Our Father” by Malotte and “One Hand, One Heart” from West Side Story. After a year of hard work and preparation that included rehearsals with my accompanist and memorizing a full program , my big day arrived.

I was 26 on the day of my first recital, 1989. My family was there to support me including my parents , sister, brother in law, (who brought his video camera), and my 2-year old nephew, who was my personal cheering section. The recital marked a turning point in my life and remains a memory I will always treasure.

During the next two-and-a-half months, I studied voice at Temple Music Prep with Mary Ellen Grant. Ms. Grant studied with Klara Myers at Temple University – I wanted to do the same. Together, we prepared my audition to be accepted to Temple and study toward an undergraduate degree in vocal performance. I was both excited and full of jitters. Being a late bloomer, I had more than my share of butterflies and was outside my comfort zone. I knew I had to take a leap of faith!

The outcome of my audition and what would follow will be explored in my next blog post!

I am enjoying learning more about you, Maria. One Hand, One Heart is one of my favorite songs! I can’t imagine how stressful an audition to get into Temple must have been. Good for you for pushing out of your comfort zone. It’s one of my goals in retirement.
